A number of varieties have been described of which three have been planted in NZ. P. arizonica is often confused with P. ponderosa subsp. brachyptera in its native range. Distinguishing characters are leaves 2-4 in P. ponderosa and 3-5 in P. arizonica, and cone scales with large strong erect prickles in P. ponderosa but with small and recurved prickles in P. arizonica, amongst others.
