Four varieties have been described, of which P. brutia Ten. var. brutia and P. brutia Ten. var. pityusa (Steven) Silba have been planted in NZ. This species can be distinguished from closely related species P. halepensis by the cones, which point to the branchlet tips whereas in P. halepensis the cones point backwards on the branches.
Natural Distribution
Turkey, E Greece, also in the Crimea, Caucasus coast, Azerbaijan, Middle East including Iraq, as well as Crete and Cyprus.
