Name
Pinus bungeana Zucc. ex Endl., Syn. Conif. : 166 (1847).[Lacebark pine]
Description
Notes
A member of the Asian nut pine group, it is a small, conical, sometimes shrub-like tree, densely branched to the ground, with distinctive bark that flakes off in large scales like a plane tree, exposing light patches. Trunks become chalky white in old trees. Pinus bungeana is unusual among white pines in having its short needles in 3s. It is distinguished from other 3-needled pines by its smooth, scaling bark, sparse foliage, the strong turpentine odour of its bruised needles and small, rounded, few-scaled cones to 6 x 5 cm, much smaller than those of P. gerardiana.
Natural Distribution
Montane regions of China.
