Description

Habit: Tree 20-45 m tall when mature.

Bark: Rough and scaly, dividedinto large, irregular plates with deep fissures, reddish brown becoming grey-brown with age.

Foliage: Needles in 5’s, usually 22-35 cm long, 0.7-1.2 mm wide; margins slightly toothed; yellowish green to bluish-grey green; lax or rigid. Leaf sheath persistent; 20-35 mm long.

Branchlets: Long and slender.

Winter buds: Ovoid to conical; not resinous.

Cones: Solitary, or in pairs or whorled; stalk 10-15 mm long; persistent; ovoid to ovoid-attenuate, curved; 7-10 cm long, 5-7 cm wide.

Seeds: Small, 4-5 mm long, 3-3.5 mm wide; light grey or brown, often with dark spots. Wings oblong, 18-24 mm long, pale yellowish brown, translucent.

Notes

An important timber tree in its natural distribution range, but hardly used in forestry plantations.
