Notes

A pinyon pine, it is a small tree mostly to 5-10 m, with an open irregular crown and slender, flexible needles in 5s without serrations on the margins. The cones are very large and heavy, 18-22 cm long and 10-15 cm wide when open, with large, thick, hard and strong scales, each with a large, blunt to rounded, protuberant umbo. The edible seeds are very large (20-25 mm long) and wingless.
