Notes

Before European settlement, the P. palustris forest dominated as much as 360,000 km2 stretching from Virginia south to Florida and west to eastern Texas in the United States. In the late 19th century, these trees were highly sought after, resulting in present day ranges down to 5% or less of the original area.
