Notes

A very distinct pine, placed as the sole representative in section Pinea subsection Pineae. Section Pinea also includes subsection Pinaster, which has similar foliage but very different cones (see e.g. P. pinaster, P. canariensis, P. brutia). The economic value of P. pinea has been its edible seeds with millions of tons of seeds harvested each year in the Mediterranean region.
