This is an interactive, web-based identification key of 91 species of cultivated pines with over 300 photographs of foliage (needles), buds, cones and other features and offers 43 features including foliage, cones, branchlets, buds, seeds, bark and habit.

The development of the Pine key was carried out at Scion, Rotorua, New Zealand, funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. Pine specimens from the National Forestry Herbarium, Scion and the associated collection of trees at Scion, the Eastwoodhill Arboretum, Gisborne, McKean's Pinetum, Rangitikei, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and McLaren Falls Park, Tauranga, all contributed to the study. We are grateful for the pine specimens we received from Mark Miller, Paul Wynen, Chris Inglis, Brent Rogan, Tom Myers, Dylan Norfield and Patrick Enright.

Elizabeth Miller, Steve Pawson, Ruth Falshaw and Trevor Jones provided helpful comments. Wendy Hurren and John Barran helped provide many of the photographs.
